Bartlett named Interim Camping Executive

The Board of Camp and Retreat Ministries has named Rev. Todd Bartlett as the Interim Executive Director of Camp and Retreat Ministries. Bartlett is currently the Director at the Alton L. Collins Retreat Center. He will immediately assume the new role, as a half-time position while continuing to support the retreat center half-time. Bartlett, an elder in the Oregon-Idaho Conference, is a graduate of Boston University School of Theology. He served as a local pastor in Bend, Pine Grove/Odell, Junction City, and Lebanon before taking over the role of Director at Alton L. Collins Retreat Center in 2009.

The Board of Camp and Retreat Ministries will conduct a search for a new Executive Director in the coming months. Retired Executive Director, Rev. Lisa Jean Hoefner will assist Bartlett in the area of donor relations and grants that support the camping ministries. Email to Bartlett in the Executive Director role can be sent to Todd@umoi.org.

Our ministry is blessed to have Todd and Lisa Jean on board in these capacities!

Both Magruder and Suttle Lake Meet Their Gray Foundation Goals!

Recognizing that camps hosting outdoor education programs for 6th graders have ongoing maintenance needs that outdoor school camp fees cannot cover, the Gray Family Foundation awarded $35,000 2-for-1 matching grants to several Oregon camps including our own Camp Magruder and Suttle Lake Camp. Both sites succeeded, raising more than $17,500 each (Suttle Lake exceeded their goal by $5,000!) to meet the requirements for the 2 for 1 match.

You know that facilities alone don’t make a camp, but they are key in providing a safe stage where wonderful weeks of camp can unfold. Thankfully we are also blessed with wonderful leaders, the beauty of creation, joyful campers, and plenty of opportunities for campers to try new things and experience God’s love in community. Together, these elements make CAMP.

It is our hope that these improvements will contribute to the comfort, safety, and long-term needs of the camp, enabling guests and outdoor school students alike to continue to explore, learn, and grow in these special places set apart for the purpose of reconnecting with the natural world and each other.

You are one of the many people that help care for this special place of ministry.

Thanks be to God!

These project funds are not for future new development at the camps, but if you would like to contribute to either Magruder's or Suttle Lake's development fund, click here!

Sawtooth Welcome Center Update

Welcome Center Interior (click to view album)

If you live nearer to Sawtooth or visit it frequently and receive this e-mail, chances are you have seen this beautiful new building rising up from the valley floor.

If you haven't, it is well worth the journey!

This project, born out of a spirit of hospitality for visiting guests and groups, has been the result of very generous donors and seemingly tireless volunteers. Given the short building season in the mountains book-ending a summer season packed with campers and guests, and the need and desire to build under budget with designated funds, director Dave Hargreaves has demonstrated a tremendous combination of patience and perseverance.

It is nearly complete! Click here to view the pictorial update.

If you want to contact Dave and the volunteers to give them a hearty congratulations on a job well done, feel free to send him an e-mail at sawtooth@gocamping.org. He will also be able to tell you what is needed in terms of wrapping the project up completely.

This isn't the last project to be completed at Sawtooth, so to give to Sawtooth's ongoing development fund, click here!
