Vol.6 Issue 3.2
The big news in the Cascadia District this week is the announcement that Bishop Elaine Stanovsky intends to appoint the
Rev. Tim Overton-Harris as the new Cascadia District Superintendent effective July 1, 2017. You can read the
full announcement here. Our current DS, Steve Sprecher, shares his welcome to Tim below.
Another event to note this week is that Sunday, March 19th will be the final worship service at Clatskanie UMC. This congregation has been gathering in worship and faithfully serving their community and the world since 1886 when Clatskanie was on a circuit served by Rev. S. Lee out of St. Helens, OR. The Clatskanie charge was established in 1892, with Rev. F. L. Moore being the first resident pastor. 2012 was the last time that a clergy person was appointed to Clatskanie, but the congregation was not ready to discontinue. Louie Jones, a lay member of the congregation, offered to lead his fellow congregants in worship and study, and they have continued as an active faith community for these five additional years. They have participated in the life of the world-wide UMC through payment of 100% of their apportionments. We mourn the end of this worshipping congregation, but know that the seeds planted and nourished by the faithful disciples of Clatskanie UMC over its long life have and will continue to bear fruit. Their light will continue to shine.
Be sure to check out the upcoming events and prayer calendar to the right.
Keep up the good ministry!
A Word from the DS
Welcome to Tim Overton-Harris!
It is with great joy that I welcome the announcement of Tim Overton-Harris as the incoming superintendent of the Cascadia District!
I have known and worked with Tim in a variety of settings over many years. Most recently he was one of the three key area coordinators for the huge task of hosting General Conference 2016 and handled a massive job masterfully.
Tim is a dedicated, hard-working leader with a commitment to justice and a deep love of for the United Methodist Church and its people. Having grown up in the church here in Oregon, he has a life-long knowledge of our conference and its ministries. We will all be well served by his thoughtfulness and passion.
I am pleased to call Tim my friend and I look forward to working with him in a smooth transition.
Steve Sprecher
