Vol.6 Issue 8.2

It is only mid-August, but we in the district office are deep in plans for the fall, and we suspect you are also in your local churches.  The Fall Charge Conferences are scheduled and more information came out today.  See the article below.

Also see what one local church has planned for the eclipse day visitors, and receive an invitation to think of young adults who could use some support as they discern God's call on their lives.

And be sure to check out the Resources section for two exciting and practical helps for your congregation to connect with your community.

Enjoy these lovely summer days!

Thank you for your leadership in the local church -- that is where Jesus is touching lives -- through you!

Blessings,

Linda Grund-Clampit
Cascadia District Administrative Assistant

Fall Charge Conference Information is Available

Summer must be ending soon. Fall Charge Conferences are on the way!

The schedule is set and today an e-mail went out to all the churches and pastors with

  • a letter from DS Tim Overton-Harris with his vision for the meetings,
  • an agenda with questions for congregations to ponder ahead of time,
  • and a list of the required reports and who is responsible for each one.

If you didn't receive that e-mail, but you need to know this information, you can find it on the district webpage.  Go to www.umoi.org/cascadia and then select "Cascadia District Fall Charge Conferences" from the left-hand menu, or go directly to www.umoi.org/cascadiadistrictfallchargeconferences

Please contact Linda in the district office with any questions:  (503) 581-3969 or linda@umoi.org

Nehalem Bay UMC Plans for Eclipse Visitors

Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church is located just half a block off of Hwy 101 in the center of Nehalem, on the North Oregon Coast.  Jennie Meyers, a member, reports their plans for the eclipse event:

"We anticipate that our Hwy will be very similar to a very, very long parking lot. We operate Warm Welcome Day Time Drop In Center three days a week for travelers, bikers, homeless and simple respite care. We plan to open the facility several days in advance of Monday the 21st and several after that date to accommodate those who may be stuck along the Hwy and may be in need of water and/or restrooms. Apparently there are no porta-potties for rent anywhere in the state so restrooms will be in great demand.

"We hope to be prepared for whatever happens but plan to go on with life as usual hoping that it's not a cloudy day and all that traveling will be found to be worth it!"

A Personal Invitation to Exploration 2017 from Rev. Christina Thompson

Rev. Christina Thompson is currently pastor of Whitney UMC in Boise.  Before that she was pastor of Seaside UMC in the Cascadia (then Western) District.  And a few years before that she was a young adult, member of Caldwell UMC, feeling a nudge from God.

Christina says, "My sister Becky and I had the opportunity to attend Exploration 97 which was held in Dallas, TX that year.  It was the place where my call to ministry was both affirmed and strengthened.  It was the place for my sister where she knew that God was not calling her into ministry. I was able to attend this event because my local church, Caldwell, ID asked if I wanted to go and helped provided the resources for both Becky and I to go."

EXPLORATION is a 3-day event for young adults to listen, discern, and respond to God’s call to ordained ministry and explore their gifts for service as a deacon or elder in the UMC.  It is held every two years, in a city somewhere in the US.  This year it will be held in Portland, November 3-5.

Christina feels that "This is an amazing opportunity for us to help get young people in our churches and communities who might be feeling God call them to ordained ministry to an event where they can listen, discern and respond to God’s call in their lives.  I invite us all to pray for the young people whom God is calling into ministry and for this event to provide an avenue for that call to be strengthened."

Do you know someone ages 18-26 who needs to attend this event to explore their sense of calling?  Please talk with them about this opportunity.  And let us know in the district office if we can help in any way.

You can get more information at www.explorecalling.org/exploration.  The early bird deadline is September 14!

Celebrate!  The National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry is 25!

The 25th anniversary of the National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry is being celebrated this week at the annual gathering of MARCHA, the Hispanic/Latino caucus of The United Methodist Church. About 300 people are gathered in Dallas for the event. #marchaumc17

See a video of all the activities of the first day here.  There is a lot of joy!

We have two Hispanic ministries in our district, which are a result of the National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry, both called Las Naciones (The Nations) -- one in Hillsboro led by Pastor Jorge Rodriguez Vasquez, and one in Salem led by Rev. Jorge Rodriguez Flores.

Help for Your Website: Your Church's Electronic Front Door

More and more, people start looking for a church online -- not in the phone book, not cruising the neighborhood.  Is your electronic front door attractive, informative and appealing -- or even up-to-date?

United Methodist Communications has affordable web site hosting and training to make the most of your online presence.  And Fall is a great time to spruce up your invitation to those who are looking for you online!

Think You Know Your Neighbors?  Check Again

The Annual Conference has a contract with MissionInsite, a demographic database with not only who, what, where but also information on religious expression preferences. Using the MissionInsite system, churches can learn more about their community, and plan how to effectively reach out. New church planners can look at the community to get a clear picture of need and opportunities.

Any of our churches can access this data for free.  Check it out on the Conference website at www.umoi.org/insite

If you've used MissionInsite before, it is time to check in again.  They've just updated all their demographics with the most current data!
