Vol.6 Issue 8.3

This issue of the Cascadia District e-newsletter turned out to be full of resources related to the social justice aspect of our life as church.

  • See the article below for a selection of materials related to fighting racism for use in many different contexts.
  •  Also below is information about World Communion Sunday which falls on October 1st this year. In World Communion Sunday, we celebrate the unity of the church of Jesus Christ around the world, and we as United Methodists take a special offering that, in part, supports higher education possibilities for racial and ethnic minority students. It is not too early to order your resources and start promoting this event and special offering.
  • And in the Resource section is information on seminars in Washington, D.C. offered by the General Board of Church and Society.  These can be tailored for any size group of high school students up to adults.

Don't forget about the opportunity to join in communion here together at noon at the District office on Thursday this week.  All are welcome!  Rev. Carol Seckel, retired, will preside in District Superintendent Tim Overton-Harris's absence.  He is in Lake Junaluska, North Carolina learning how to be a District Superintendent!

And check out the links in the calendar to find information on the Fall Charge Conferences and the All-District Colloquy (those appointed or assigned in the district are required to attend; retired clergy are welcome.  Please register online by September 12th).

Also in the calendar are links to the informational workshops offered to clergy who are covered by the Conference health insurance plan.  Local Church Treasurers or SPRC chairs may also be interested in getting the information offered. There is more information online at www.umoi.org/healthandpension

Thank you for your leadership in the local church -- that is where Jesus is touching lives -- through you!

Blessings,

Linda Grund-Clampit

World Communion Sunday Resources

World Communion Sunday is celebrated on the first Sunday in October.

On this Special Sunday of The United Methodist Church, not only do we celebrate our unity in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, but we also come together as United Methodists to lift up under-served students with a special offering.

Our gifts help provide scholarships for racial and ethnic minority students, removing the financial obstacles for young men and women for whom education is difficult, if not impossible to access. Through our connectional giving, many first-generation students will be able to attend college.

To help you prepare for this Special Sunday, download the free World Communion Sunday Pastor and Leader's kit today. You’ll find everything you need to make this year’s celebration your best one yet.

You also can order leaflet/offering envelopes and posters to enhance your World Communion Sunday celebration at https://shop.umc.org or by calling 888-346-3862. All of these resources are free from United Methodist Communications.

There is also a free e-book “How to Promote World Communion Sunday” for easy ideas to get your congregation excited about this Special Sunday.

Seminars in Washington, DC offered by Board of Church and Society

As you begin planning for 2018, consider bringing a group to Washington, DC for a General Board of Church and Society Seminar, where social advocacy and engagement intersects with faith and scripture. Whether it’s poverty, immigration, or the challenges of racism and prejudice, these seminars can instruct, equip, and empower United Methodists to do justly, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God.

The seminar program in DC takes place in the United Methodist Building on Capitol Hill, next door to the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court. Field trips are also incorporated into the seminar schedule so that groups have the opportunity to visit and learn about the local DC community.

Typical seminars run from one to four days, depending on the goals and needs of the group participating. A typical day begins at 9:30 am and ends at 4:30 pm allowing time for sightseeing, activities, and recreation in the evenings. All seminars are tailor designed to fit the interests and needs of the group and are filled with interactive exercises, Bible studies, testimonies, and discussions.

Topics are chosen by the interests of the group! Some previous topics have included: poverty, homelessness, human trafficking, gender-based violence, environmental justice, immigration, refugees, mass incarceration and inter-religious dialogue
