An Invitation from the District Lay Leader

A few years ago, the Oregon-Idaho Conference was asked to read Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations by Bishop Robert Schnase.  One of the practices is passionate worship.

In the Oregon-Idaho Conference (including the Cascadia District), the laity are often called upon to plan or lead all or a portion of a worship service.  In some local churches, laity lead worship on a regular basis…quarterly, monthly, weekly.  So how do we learn to prepare and lead passionate worship?

Reverend Peg Lofsvold has agreed to facilitate Designing and Leading Worship at Astoria United Methodist Church.  This two-session class is for any lay person who is involved in planning or leading worship.  (BONUS:  The class also qualifies for credit as one of the required advanced classes for certified lay servants.)  Teams from local churches are encouraged to attend together.

A class providing useful information with a GREAT facilitator? I know you can hardly wait to register.  So here is everything you need to know:

Title:  DESIGNING AND LEADING WORSHIP

Facilitator:  Reverend Peg Lofsvold

Location:  Astoria United Methodist Church, 1076 Franklin Avenue, Astoria, OR 97103

Dates:  February 17 and March 10 (must attend both sessions for certification credit)

Time:  9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

  • First Session: Participants will discover meaningful patterns for worship, explore ways to illuminate Scripture and prayer, and practice key roles of worship teams and leaders.
  • Second Session: Participants will present elements of worship, explore worship settings other than Sunday morning, and receive helpful feedback for growth as worship leaders.

Between sessions, participants will prepare elements of worship to present at the second session.

Required Text: The text for the class is Leading Worship by Taylor Burton-Edwards (provided with paid registration). Additional resources will be provided at each session. A browsing library will be available, too.

Registration Fee:  The registration fee of $30.00 (collected at the first session) covers the text and lunch.

To register: Register by sending an email to Paula Sadler (jpcsadler@aol.com) before February 9, 2018.  Please indicate any dietary restrictions.

One last thing, we need a minimum of 6 registered participants to hold the class.  So don’t wait…register today.

Also of Note: Year End Reports and The Way Forward Table Talks

  • Year End Reports are due January 31, 2018:  These are the annual online statistical forms, as well as various other church reports.  You should have received information already. If you have questions, or need help to  meet the deadline, contact me in the district office.

  • The Council of Bishops has requested that annual conferences engage in conversations related to understandings of human sexuality and the work of The Commission on a Way Forward. Bishop Stanovsky has asked the District Superintendents to arrange conversations  this spring, prior to the Annual Conference Session in June.  There are currently three scheduled which may be convenient for Cascadia District folks.  We are in process of scheduling two more in the Cascadia District. Watch for more details on the process and conversation, but please note these dates:
    • Saturday, March 17, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Gresham First UMC
    • Saturday, April 21 at Medford UMC
    • Saturday, May 19, 1-4 p.m. at Corvallis First UMC
