Reflections on values with Camp & Retreat Ministries
Surrounding Ourselves with Trust
Value 7: Trust
By Peggy Lovegren, Director at Wallowa Lake Camp
Trust is a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.
Synonyms for trust are confidence, belief, faith, certainty, assurance, conviction, credence, and reliance.
I trust God in everything. I trust God wants me to be in ministry at Wallowa Lake United Methodist Camp. I trust God wants me to spread the good news of God’s love.
Trusting someone means you feel safe with them both physically and emotionally.
Guests coming to camp often don’t know our staff. They often aren’t sure what to expect at camp. Being a Christian camp director means I will show love to all, but it does not mean I will blindly trust all. Because of that, I rigorously screen and train all of our paid and volunteer staff. I want to make sure that everyone at camp feels they can trust that they will be safe, both physically and emotionally while they are here.
All staff are required to fill out annual application/disclosure forms, do an annual background check, be interviewed, take required trainings and follow our safe sanctuaries policies which always require a minimum of two non-related, non-same household approved adults to be with children, youth and vulnerable adults.
We have worked hard to earn trust! Trust is a non-negotiable value in both my personal and my work life. I need to be able to trust all of our staff. Donors and guests are trusting us to be good stewards of God’s camp. Groups book and re-book because they trust that what they will experience when they come to this camp is the highest level of Christian hospitality!
