Reflections with Camp & Retreat Ministries

Covid-19 Update

Greetings from Camp and Retreat Ministries,

In the past weeks we have heard more from the governors of Oregon and Idaho as well as our Bishop providing direction for our public lives. In the state of Oregon, on Monday March 23, Governor Brown issued Executive Order 20-12 which gave direction for more businesses to close and more of us to live by the maxim “stay home, stay healthy.” On the same day in Idaho, Governor Little addressed concerns over the potential lack of ICU beds in Idaho, eased regulations to bring more medical personnel to the situation and the Idaho State Board of Education closed all school districts until at least April 20. On Tuesday, March 24th our Bishop released a letter extending her directive to cease in person worship through April 30, 2020.

As a United Methodist ministry, it became clear to us after releasing last week’s statement, that we would need to cancel the two events we had planned for April (Confirmation Retreat and Leadership Training). These have been cancelled. We are working on how we may provide the leadership training online in preparation for our summer season. As of now, we are planning to hold our program events scheduled for this summer, including the 75th Anniversary celebration for Camp Magruder July 3-4, 2020.

We are a people who live with hope and we are a people who care for our Camp and Retreat community' to keep us all safe from unnecessary harm and risk. To live this way requires that we “Do the five”:

1) wash hands

2) Cough/sneeze into your elbow

3) Don’t touch your face

4) Stay at least 6 feet apart from others

5) Stay home if you feel sick (these are from the WHO and more can be found at their website)

These challenging times can bring out the best in each of us as we find creative ways to share with one another while living within the current limits set by government or church leaders. In Camp and Retreat Ministries we have been meeting with colleagues across the country to support one another and to share with one another how we are communicating the wonder of camp during this time. In the weeks ahead, we will be sharing with you what we are learning and invite you to find ways to encounter God through scripture and connections to God’s creation and the communities to which you belong.

Each day I live with the hope that our human efforts, joined with the healing spirit of Jesus, will bring us together.

See you around the campfire soon,

Rev. Todd Bartlett

Executive Director on Camp and Retreat Ministries

Volunteer/Leadership Training and Confirmation Retreat Cancelled

Due to the recent Oregon Stay at Home mandate, the Volunteer and Leadership Training at Camp Magruder originally scheduled for April 17-19, 2020,  has been cancelled. Leaders are working on an option that will allow us to offer this training remotely at a future date, and we will let you know when that is in place. Please keep all our volunteers, staff, campers and families in your prayers as this new way of being unfolds.

We have also cancelled the Confirmation Retreat that was scheduled to take place 4/24-4/26 at Suttle Lake Camp.

Snapshots of Camp and Retreat Ministries

Many of us have spent more time indoors than we are accustomed too, lately. If you feel like we do, you're probably longing to feel God's presence in nature. Please enjoy these snapshots from each of our sites, reminding us of God's awesome presence in these sacred spaces that we share.
