This is a quick e-mail with reminders:

And a link to the survey we mentioned in last week's newsletter.  We want to know if there are ways we can help you improve your ministry and outreach during this challenging time.  If you are a pastor of a local church or in leadership in a local church, please participate in the brief survey!

We'll have a full newsletter next week again, with words from DS Wendy and a follow-up on the AC Session registration for lay and clergy members, which you should see in your inbox early next week.

It Is Past Time to Talk
About Racism and White Privilege

Reminder: Opportunity for discussion with DS Wendy about White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo, next Tuesday August 4

Wendy says, "I am inviting you to join me and others in the Cascadia District to begin learning and growing together about racism and white privilege.  If you do not have an opportunity to study in your local church, this is for you … if you want to have a discussion with others before you lead one yourself in your ministry setting, this is for you … if you simply want to have an additional opportunity for discussion, this is for you."
Vital Conversations video still
August 4 : 9:00am or 7:00 pm  via Zoom.  A discussion of White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo.
Read the book or watch this brief video (20 minutes) of her presentation for the General Commission on Religion and Race Vital Conversations series,
Come prepared to discuss:
  • One minute statement of how you have benefited from white privilege or been impacted as a person of color by the white privilege you have witnessed others receiving.
  • What challenged you in this book/presentation… what did you learn … what were you not ready to hear?
  • What will you take away from this reading/presentation?
  • What does this book/presentation call you to do?
Find the Zoom link on the District calendar entry by clicking here. for the 9 a.m. session and by clicking here for the 7 p.m. session on Tuesday, August 4.

Although it is not necessary for participation, email Wendy if you plan to attend and which time (wendy@umoi.org.)   If our group is large, we will use break out rooms for better discussion.  Wendy calls this “Phase One” as she foresees additional opportunities for discussion, learning and growing throughout the year and beyond.  This is a journey that will take some time.

How Can We Help You?

The Cascadia District Church Extension Society and DS Wendy Woodworth are wondering in what areas our local churches need help in order to continue being church in these days.  How can we best resource our district congregations to continue worshiping and connecting in ministry and fellowship?

We have prepared a survey will be going for local church leadership and pastors asking for your input.  We need your help to find the best way forward!

To participate in the survey, click here.

Reimagining Life Together Plans

A reminder:  the Bishop has okayed local congregations to operate within the guidelines of Phase 2 of our Greater NW Area re-opening plan if you have a Phase 2 plan which has been approved by the DS.

Many Cascadia District congregations have submitted Phase 2 plans and have had them approved or are working with the DS to finalize them.

If your church has not yet submitted a Phase 2 plan, you may do so by emailing it to DS Wendy at wendy@umoi.org.  Wendy will be on vacation from August 15-30.  If you have not yet submitted a plan and you want to have it reviewed prior to August 15, please submit it Wendy by August 10. Plans received after August 10 will be reviewed in early September.

In Phase 2 communal worship may happen in a variety of online or virtual ways, but indoor in-person worship is not allowed.  Outdoor or drive-up communal worship may be allowed under certain conditions with an approved plan.

To see the full guidance regarding re-opening our church buildings, refer to the Reimagining Life Together document at greaternw.org/reimagining-life-together/ . Direct questions to DS Wendy Woodworth at wendy@umoi.org

One-to-One Meetings Follow-up

During her one-to-one meetings this summer with pastors of Cascadia District churches and other Cascadia District-related clergy, DS Wendy has been discussing setting goals.

This is reminder that a copy of your professional/ministerial and personal goals are to be sent via e-mail to Wendy (wendy@umoi.org) and Linda (linda@umoi.org) within two weeks after your one-to-one meeting with Wendy.

Thank you!

How Are We Helping?
In So Many Ways!

Continue to support your local church financially.

Our buildings are closed, but the church is open and still doing ministry!  Your tithes and donations are critical to continuing that work

Greater NW Area Fund for Families

The money in this fund will be distributed through local churches to the need they see across our episcopal area (Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Alaska), like the Grocery Gift Card Grants

UMCOR Sheltering in Love Giving Campaign

This fund will assist vulnerable communities in the United States and around the world  It is Advance #3022612. You can give through your local church by putting the advance number in the memo line of your check or give online.
