Special Camp & Retreat Ministries Update

In yesterday's E-News, we promised to keep you updated as the situation changes at our sites. Here's the latest from Todd, who has been staying in close contact with all our directors:

On Wednesday afternoon the Benson family evacuated from the Collins Retreat Center. While the Center is not in immediate danger, the mandatory evacuation zone is at the front door--so to speak--of the retreat center. Clackamas County issued a mandatory evacuation up to Highway 211, which runs in front of the retreat center. If a fire were to occur in that area, the only road for escape would be running into the fire, so the decision was made to pro-actively evacuate. We had been housing two people at Collins as part of our contract with Clackamas County to be an isolation shelter. They have found housing elsewhere and are safe. Other staff living on site have also evacuated and are hoping to be able to return to their residence soon.
Camp Latgawa itself is not under an evacuation order but with only one route of escape, Kate Vaden and her husband left the site earlier this week due to the strong winds potentially dropping trees and trapping them in. They, too, will remain off-site until such time as it is safe to return.
In a normal season Suttle Lake would be the site we are often most concerned about in terms of wildfire, having experienced some close calls in the past. At this time, however, the current fires are not likely to reach Suttle Lake.
Camp Magruder is seeking ways to provide assistance to those on the north coast who may need to evacuate. For the time being, the Bay City area has a reduced urgency. Troy did report to me that two families from Idaville have come to the site for shelter due to the fire in that area.
Our prayers go out to those whose communities have been greatly damaged by these fires.
